A Day For Africa
Billy Strachan is an inspiration to many people in the Comox Valley. After hearing a speech made by Stephen Lewis in 2006, Billy took action against HIV and AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa.
On the first Saturday of each month a work party of volunteers were assigned paying jobs for the day. At the same time that work parties were completing odd jobs, Billy also coordinated Learning For Africa which was driven by special interest lectures and workshops. There was a way for everyone in the community to contribute at the day's events. People donated to attend a workshop on water colour paintings, a baking class, and a lecture on Bedoin life in Jordan. Two local tattoo artists from Black Rose Tattoos contributed 10% of their weekly wage to the cause. After A Day for Africa was completed on four Saturdays in four consecutive months, over $25000 was raised and donated to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The cheque was to presented directly to Stephen Lewis by Billy Strachan on June 27, 2008. Now it's time for you to start your own A Day For Africa.
